UNIVERSITIES AND UNIVERSITY COLLEGES ACT 1971 CONSTITUTION OF UNIVERSITI PENDIDIKAN SULTAN IDRIS UNIVERSITI PENDIDIKAN SULTAN IDRIS (ACADEMIC MATTERS) RULES 2008 The Rules to manage, supervise and coordinate academic matters for a programme of study culminating in the award of a bachelor’s degree offered by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris and other matters related thereto. In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 32 (1) of the Constitution of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris 1998 [P.U. (A) 151], the Board of Directors of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris makes the following Rules: 1. Citation, Commencement and Application 1.1) These Rules may be cited as the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Academic Matters) Rules 2008 and shall come into force from the date determined by the Senate. 1.2) These Rules shall have effect to the students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students pursuing the bachelor’s degree programme.
2. Interpretation In these Rules, unless the context otherwise requires:- “Academic Advisor” means a lecturer appointed under paragraph 11 of these Rules under Registration and Records; |
| “Academic Dishonesty” means any actions by a student which is in violation of Rule 8 of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Students’ Discipline) Rules 1999; |
“Academic Session” means a period of study for a programme of study whose which dates of commencement and completion are determined by the Senate; |
| “field of study” means a specialisation offered in a programme of study; |
| “assessment” means continuous evaluation towards courses of study enrolled by students, including but not limited to, tests, quizzes, assignments, evaluation of laboratory work, field work and practicum, whichever relevant, in order to enhance understanding and skills of the students; |
| “CGPA” means cumulative grade point average that is determined by dividing the total grade points obtained by the total credit hours taken from the first semester up to the current semester; |
| “compulsory course” means courses comprising of university courses and core education courses; |
| “core course” means a course that is fixed in a programme of study that is considered compulsory to attain an adequate skill level in the field of study of a programme; |
| “course registration” means registration for each course, including changes to courses made through the Student Information System according to paragraph 3.3 of these Rules under Registration and Records; |
| “course” means an education or training unit available that is provided for a specific period of time, normally within a semester, that contributes towards the credits to a programme of study; |
| “Dean of Faculty” means the Dean of a faculty appointed by the Vice Chancellor under Article 21(4) of the Constitution of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris 1998; |
| “degree” means a bachelor’s degree; |
| “department” means an academic entity set up under a faculty that conducting relevant academic activities according to Article 21(1) of the Constitution of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris 1998; |
| “Disciplinary Authorities” means the Vice Chancellor, or if relevant, any staff member appointed under sub-section 16B (3) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 to execute the disciplinary obligations according to the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Students’ Discipline) Rules 1999; |
| “elective course” means a course that may be choosen by a student to substantiate his field of study that suit his interest; |
| “equivalent course” means a course that is recognised by the faculty as being equivalent to another course; |
| “Examination Committee” means a committee set up by the Senate to review and endorse the results of the examination result and to execute such other powers vested to it by the provisions of these Rules or any other related regulations; |
| “examination hall” means a place or space or area where the examination is conducted; |
| “examination” means the final examination of each semester; |
| “faculty” means any faculty of the University established under Article 21(1) of the Constitution of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris 1998; |
| “focus” means one (1) package course taken within a specific area field; |
| “graduation” means the award conferment of a degree by the university to a student who have complied with the term and condition for graduation; |
| “industrial training” means practical training fixed to a field of study carried out conducted in an industry or organisation for a specific period of time determined by the Senate; |
| “major course” means a course that is fixed in a programme of study to achieve a specific level of skill in a field of study of a programme; |
| “major” means specialisation in a field that fulfils the credit hours or credit percentage fixed for a programme of study; |
| “minor course” means a course comprising focused courses in the second programme of study offered; |
| “minor” means a second programme of study focus in the field offered; |
| “new student” means a student who accepted an offer from the university and registered for the programme of study and is in the first semester of study; |
| “period of study” means a period of time allocated to a student to complete all courses within the structure of study programme before graduation; |
| “practicum” means counselling practicum conducted in a school or specific organisation for a period of time fixed by the Senate; |
| “pre-condition” means a course that must be taken as a pre-requisite before pursuing in a subsequent course; |
| “programme of study” means a group of courses and/or training that is fixed and provided for to meet the conferment of a degree requirement; |
| “registration slip” means a slip which contains course information registered for by a student; |
| “semester registration” means registration of students at the faculty in every semester in order to activate studentship ; |
| “semester” means a period of study of 18 weeks comprising fourteen (14) weeks lecture, one (1) week break and three (3) weeks examination; |
| “Senate” means the University Authority established under Article 20(1) of the Constitution of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris 1998; |
| “SGPA” means the semester grade point average that is determined by dividing the total grade points obtained with the total credit hours taken in any a semester; |
| “specialisation” means the main or prime field of study in a programme of study; |
| “Student Information System” means a system developed and regulated by the university for purposes of storing student information; |
| “student” means a registered student who is pursuing a course offered by the university for a bachelor degree programme and being listed under the student register of the university; |
| “study course” means courses offered by a faculty for every programme of study; |
| “teaching practice” means teaching practicum conducted in schools or educational institutions for a period of time determined by the Senate; |
| “transcript” means an official statement issued by the university which contains the detailed results of the examination throughout the period of study; |
| “university course” means a course deemed necessary by the Senate to ensure comprehensive education provided to a student; |
| “Vice Chancellor” means the chief executive officer of the university appointed under Article 12(2) of the Constitution of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris 1998; and |
| “university” means Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. |
